Bangtao (also spelled Bang Tao) is a large open bay with one of Phuket's longest beaches. Much of the coastline is taken up by the Laguna Complex, a huge complex of luxury hotels and an 18-hole golf course, but the beach is generally very calm and unspoilt. There are many local beach restaurants and lounge bars, very popular for evening drinks and dinners.

The Laguna area gets its name from the Laguna Resort Complex, which dominates much of the area. The complex includes six four- and five-star hotels, including the Banyan Tree and Dusit Laguna, as well as the 18-hole Laguna Golf Course. The casuarina-lined beach, known as "Lei Pang Beach", is quiet and uncrowded, despite being close to a large number of large resorts.

This area is considered one of the best places to live in Phuket along with the adjacent Cherng Talay area. In addition to Bang Tao Beach, the shops, restaurants, cafes and overall atmosphere attract most people who want to live or own a home in Phuket. It also offers the best rental rates for villas and apartments.

The very successful Boat Avenue shopping and restaurant complex is extremely popular and always bustling. The nearby Port de Phuket shopping mall is also gaining popularity.

Nearby is Cherng Talay Village, located away from Bang Tao Beach. It borders the Laguna Phuket resort complex and many luxury developments, but still retains a very traditional atmosphere with shops and a large market. Cherng Talay is the hub of this part of Phuket with an abundance of restaurants and shops, as well as other small businesses.
